A man is in a serious condition in hospital after a suspected late night stabbing.

The 36-year-old from Chichester suffered a severe chest injury during the violent incident in Shripney Road, near the War Memorial Hospital in Bognor.

Officers were called to the scene shortly before 9.30pm.

There they found the injured man, who has now been transferred to Southampton General Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Sussex Police say the incident is being as a "suspected stabbing".

A passerby told The Argus there were "lots of cops" in the Shripney area at about midnight last night, and several officers "looked like they were searching for something".

He also said that an underpass had been cordoned off using police tape and some roads in the area were also closed as an investigation into the suspected assault was launched

Another Bognor resident, who asked not to be named, said that police remained at the scene this morning.

She said: “We are treating this as an isolated incident and there is nothing at this stage to suggest there is a threat to the wider community.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area while we work to establish the full circumstances.
