A power cut is affecting properties across Brighton and Hove this afternoon.

UK Power Networks estimated that 1,343 customers had been affected in the city, as of 1.40pm.

As of 2.30pm, this figure has fallen to 115.

The company, which is responsible for maintaining the electricity cables in the South East of England, has received more than 45 calls about the ongoing issue.

The power cut is known to be affecting households in the following postcodes:

  • BN2 3
  • BN2 9
  • BN3 4
  • BN3 5
  • BN41 1

A UK Power Networks spokesman said: "An underground electricity cable faulted on our high voltage network, causing an area wide power cut.

"We're sorry for any disruption this may be causing you.

"We estimate the power will be back on between 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

"We may be able to get some customers on sooner."

Update

At 3.25pm, UK Power Networks issued an updatd statement on the power cut.

A spokeswoman said: "UK Power Networks engineers are working quickly and safely to restore electricity supplies in part of Brighton, following a power interruption shortly before 1pm today.

"A fault on an underground cable initially resulted in 1,343 customers losing supply at 12.55pm.

"All but 315 customers had power restored within two minutes and by 2.26pm power had been restored to all but 12 properties.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and work is continuing to reconnect the remaining 12 supplies as quickly as possible."
