MOTORBIKERS, drivers and cyclists are being encouraged to sign up for an all-electric rally taking place this summer.
The London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally, the first of its kind in England, will take place on July 18.
People are invited to sign up for the challenge that will start near Westminster Bridge and finish at Madeira Drive, Brighton.
Around 60 vehicles are expected to enter the inaugural event, organised by The Big Lemon bus company.
The winner will be whoever completes the event with the least energy consumed.
Founder and chief executive of The Big Lemon bus company Tom Druitt met The Argus at a photo launch for the event today.
The Green councillor said that electric power is the future of transport and that more people should considering using it.
He said: "The category we have the most entrees for is actually electric bikes - pedal bikes.
"That is currently the most popular category. I might be driving a bus, I might be driving a motorbike - I'll have to see.
"There are two reasons for this rally. One to have a really fun day out and the other is to showcase all the amazing technology we have got.
"The progress that is being made with renewable energy technology is incredible and we should be shouting about it."
The Big Lemon CIC runs multiple bus services across the city and continues to push its environmentally sustainable agenda.
Powered by electric motors, the buses are charged and deep-cleaned at the depot each day.
Some of the buses will feature in the rally, alongside the fully electric Zero SRF motorbike that Mr Druitt may choose to ride.
A media partnership with Fully Charged has also been confirmed. The global YouTube and internet movement which currently boasts around 750,000 subscribers will be joining as the digital broadcaster.
Robert Llewellyn, founder of Fully Charged, added: "Electric cars have come so far in recent years, it's time to celebrate the dozens of EVs available now, and the increasing public appetite to drive electric."
The winner will receive the coveted London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally Yellow Riband.
Tickets cost £50 and entrants can go to www.londontobrighton.org to sign up.
