Residents were stirred by the sound of loud shouts late at night as police made a drug-driving arrest.
Officers stopped a car in Montpelier Place, Brighton, at 11.40pm on Monday and detained a 25-year-old man.
A witness, who asked not to be named, said they heard shouting in the street shortly after midnight.
They then saw officers appear to handcuff a man before placing him in the back of a police vehicle and driving away.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Police stopped a vehicle in Montpelier Place, Brighton, on Monday, March 1, at 11.40pm and a man was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and taken into custody.
"The man, aged 25, was later released under investigation."
