CYCLING is a hot topic in Brighton at the moment but the cyclists in our Argus archive pictures today didn’t have to worry about special lanes as there wasn’t so much traffic.

The woman is pushing her bike near the Clock Tower in the centre of Brighton – we don’t know much about this picture but it must have been after the Second World War as the large advert urges people to save money and “help reconstruction”.

The Argus: Sheepcote Valley, 1949

This young man has arrived at Sheepcote Valley camp site – we think it was around 1949, well before Lycra.

Warren Road, Woodingdean, circa 1953

Warren Road, Woodingdean, circa 1953

This great picture of Warren Road in Woodingdean is thought to have been taken in the early Fifties.

Those in the know say the car on the right is a Ford Zephyr – it has a Brighton registration (OUF 893) and was “almost certainly purchased new from Hartley and Midgley”.
