THE MAN accused of the kidnap and murder of a woman as she walked home has appeared in court.

Wayne Couzens, 48, appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with killing Sarah Everard, 33, in South London.

The serving Metropolitan Police officer was taken to hospital for the second time on Friday with a head injury.

Ms Everard’s body was found in a rural area outside Ashford in Kent.

Couzens, of Deal in Kent, made his first court appearance this morning, accused of kidnap and murder.

The defendant, wearing a grey tracksuit, stood as the charges were put to him.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday March 16.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring said: “Mr Couzens, I am sending your case to the crown court sitting at the Central Criminal Court, what you might know as the Old Bailey.

“You will appear there for your first appearance on March 16.

“I don’t have the power to consider the question of bail. That will be considered should you wish to make an application to the court on March 16.

“You are therefore remanded in custody until that date, both charges having been sent to the crown court.”
