WHAT is concerning me is the state of the roadsides in and around Brighton and Hove.

Specifically the A27 and A23 around and out of Brighton - from Shoreham Airport to the Lewes turn off and out of Brighton on the A23 as far as Warninglid, which is as far as I’ve ventured in lockdown.

Recently, I went out for the first time in a while and as absolutely horrified at the state of the sides of the road and central reservations on these roads.

The amount of litter is absolutely horrific. How was that permitted to happen?

Every year it gets worse and is most noticeable in winter when the vegetation dies back, exposing the years of neglect.

I understand that the A23 was last de-littered in 2017, which is shameful. Come the spring it all gets hidden when the vegetation grows over it and its forgotten till the next autumn.

Lorry tyres, hub caps, car parts, abandoned road signs with their associated sand bags and metal frames, plastic, traffic cones, chunks of wood and boxes, plastic, tins, bottles, plastic - did I mention PLASTIC - in a dozens of forms.

There’s enough plastic lying around to build a life size replica of the O2 arena. Its absolutely shameful and a total embarrassment.

This city is supposed to have a very Green credential but sadly that is very hard to believe when you see that state of our roadsides.

Two weekends ago I drove along The Drove past the Amex Stadium and there were large bags of rubbish on the side of the road.

It turned out to be a man walking along the side of the road picking up and bagging all the rubbish. Being a Sunday I’m assuming it wasn’t a council worker. Whoever he was, he deserves a medal for his efforts as the roadsides were immaculate. Such a pity the rest of the surrounds are such a disgusting dump.

Please can I appeal to the elected leaders to get this revolting mess sorted before the spring kicks in and it hidden for yet another year. It is nothing short of scandalous.
