A COMMUNITY group has launched a fundraiser to transform a rundown footbridge.

Diversity Lewes is hoping to raise £2,000 for the refurbishment of the graffitied bridge that links Pinwell Road to East Sussex College in De Montford Road, Lewes.

Schoolchildren from Lewes district schools will be asked to create designs based on themes including climate change and Black Lives Matter.

The winning artwork will be displayed in 12 places on all-weather panels on the walls of the bridge.

Anthony Kalume, project leader, said he would like the project to kick-off an annual arts event to support emerging artistic talent.

He said: “Diversity Lewes was formed to create awareness on all things discriminatory and hence this project promotes inclusion and the valuable differences within our community worth celebrating.”

Councillor Adrian Ross, Chairman of Lewes District Council, said he is backing the project and has donated £250 through the Chair’s Civic Allowance.

He said: “I believe, as the organisers do, that a new look footbridge would be inspirational to the many young students who walk though it to get to college most days.

"This venture chimes perfectly with my twin themes of office of 'environmental action and a fair society’ and I very much look forward to seeing how our talented young people interpret them in their artwork.”

The winning artwork will also be displayed online.
