A POPULAR Brighton pub is set for a revamp and a new landlord.

The Duke of Wellington in Upper Gloucester Road has been closed since last March, when the UK was plunged into its first national lockdown as coronavirus spread across the globe.

Over the weekend, a sign appeared on the side of the building telling passers-by they could "run this pub".

The sign, placed there on behalf of Star Pubs, the pub business of Heineken UK, said there was a "self-employed management opportunity" at the Duke of Wellington and gave contact detail for anyone who might be interested in the position.

The Argus contacted Star Pubs and was told the company was "no longer recruiting for this pub".

A spokeswoman said: "We’ve had a fantastic response to the opportunity at the Duke of Wellington so are no long recruiting for this pub.

"We will start work on a revamp once the recruitment process is completed and the new licensee is in place with a view to reopening the pub as soon as possible after restrictions allow."

The Star Pub website adds: "A modern refurbishment will enhance the already popular Duke of Wellington, positioning it as a vibrant hub for local drinkers and sports fans.

"The internal trading space will remain zoned, with a lively bar, sports area complete with pool and darts, and a relaxed lounge area, all finished with timber accents and leather upholstery.

"Flat screen TVs throughout the venue (featuring Sky & BT sports packages), a new pool table and darts area, as well as a function room will create a truly versatile pub, catering to any customer looking to enjoy a drink on any occasion."

Star Pubs recognised the Duke of Wellington as a "popular destination for sports fans looking to enjoy a drink on their way to and from the Amex Stadium", saying its location near Brighton Station, residential streets and shopping districts ensures there is "always a steady flow of customers looking for a quality venue to drink in".

The website states: "The extensive works will elevate the characterful Duke of Wellington into a premium venue, with an on-trend drinks offer.

"Its updated offering will accommodate local drinkers looking to socialise over a game of pool, as well as tourists looking for a quality pub in the local area. With the right marketing, the pub has the potential to become a community hub, hosting game and quiz nights."

The Star Pubs spokeswoman said that, though the company was no longer actively recruiting for the management position at the Duke of Wellington, people in the Brighton area were still encouraged to get in touch if they were looking to take on a leased or freehold pub.

She said: "We may have further vacancies at Just Add Talent pubs in and around Brighton over the coming months.

"The Just Add Talent agreement offers people the opportunity to run their own pub at a fraction of the start-up cost of taking on a leased or freehold pub. It comes with a comprehensive package of support.
