A GROUP of Travellers have set up camp at a popular Brighton park.

As many as six caravans and other assorted vehicles have been pictured parked in Stanmer Park, which is near the University of Sussex.

One vehicle can be seen towing woodcutting machinery.

The Argus understands the group arrived on the green yesterday and that the city council is working with Sussex Police to find a way to remove them as soon as possible.

In 2019, a group set up camp in the park, where a witness said they saw “kids” riding 4x4 dirt bikes, causing damage to the green.

Labour MP Lloyd Russell Moyle said it is important that everyone can exercise their rights fairly.

He said: "We all need to share it and that includes supporting the traveller community.

"They [the Travellers] also need to work with the council to make sure that when the right moment comes along, they move away to the next site.

"The council need to make sure they have the sites appropriate and negotiate a stopping point for them.

"And we all need to make sure the site is clean. That is how you manage these issues, working all together."
