BACK in 1937 a crowd gathered on Brighton beach to watch a stricken plane being pulled ashore.

Unfortunately we don’t know much more about this fascinating picture from The Argus archive and would be glad to hear from any readers who do.

There was a similar scene – and in a similar spot – a few years later, in 1940.

It is thought this “float plane” may have been carrying members of the Dutch royal family away from the Nazi invasion when it got into trouble over the sea.

Finally a shot from January 24, 1938, shows the devastation after an RAF plane crashed into a house in Lyndhurst Road, Hove, on the corner with Holland Road.
