A pair of squabbling seagulls were so busy fighting each other on a rooftop that they failed to realise they had become entangled in a section of netting.

Firefighters were called to rescue the brawling birds from the five-storey high rooftop in Tisbury Road, Hove, last Sunday afternoon.

However, the gulls seemed less than grateful for the assistance.

A witness, who asked not to be named, described how one of the birds turned on its rescuer after he snipped it free of the netting.

He said: "The birds didn't seem too bothered by the fuss they'd created, or the fire engine which was needed to lift their rescuer up five floors to the rooftop to untangle them. They were too busy continuing their fight."

He said fire crews had arrived just in time as, with the bird's wings trapped, they would certainly have died if they had fallen from the roof.

The rescue took about half-an-hour, with firefighters leaving the scene at around 5pm.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "At 4.28pm on Sunday, March 21, we were called to attend a residential property in Tisbury Road, Hove, to carry out an animal rescue.

"Two seagulls were trapped in netting on the roof of the property. Firefighters from Preston Circus and Hove attended. Crews used an Aerial Ladder Platform to access the birds and the seagulls were released."
