THE bomb squad was called to a road near Gatwick Airport after a resident uncovered what they thought was an explosive while gardening.
Police and fire crews rushed to the scene in Charlwood Road, Crawley, at 4.20pm yesterday and quickly closed the road, setting up a cordon around the site.
Charlwood Road runs alongside Gatwick Airport. The bomb squad was called and the item was checked.
A Gatwick Police spokesman said: "At 4.20pm on Sunday, March 28, police responded to a report of an unexploded device found by a resident while gardening in Charlwood Road, Crawley.
"A safety cordon was put in place as a precaution while Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended.
"The item was checked and found not to be an explosive device. Roads reopened at 7.45pm
"The airport remained open throughout."
