Four people are receiving treatment after a four-vehicle crash on the A283.

Emergency teams are on the scene of the collision between Steyning and Shoreham and the road has been closed.

Fire crews have warned the road is set to stay shut "for some time" as recovery work is carried out.

An image capturing the aftermath of the incident shows debris scattered across the road with the front ends of two cars destroyed by the impact.

Sussex Police say four people involved in the collision are currently receiving treatment, but none of their injuries are thought to be life-changing or life-threatening at this time.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police were called at 3.38pm on Monday, March 29, to reports of a four-vehicle collision on the A283 in Steyning, between the junction of Dacre Gardens and the roundabout to the A2037.

"Four people are receiving medical treatment – none of the injuries are thought to be life-changing or life-threatening at this time. The road remains blocked while recovery of the vehicles is arranged.

"Motorists are asked to find alternative routes where possible."

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews are also on the scene.

A spokesman for the service said: "We are currently in attendance at the scene of a road traffic collision on the A283 between Shoreham and Steyning.

“We have one crew from Shoreham Fire Station in attendance, alongside colleagues from the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Sussex Police.

"The road is expected to remain closed for some time, and we would urge drivers to avoid the area."
