IT’s 1959, an era when beatniks and rock and rollers spent many a happy hour dancing down on Brighton seafront.
Bands used to play there in the summer and there would be crowds jiving to the music. It seems anything went fashion-wise – bikinis and bare feet or heels and full Fifties’ skirts.
Another fantastic Argus archive shot shows girls clamouring round rock and roll singer Vince Taylor and his band The Playboys.
This was in Brighton, again in 1959, and it was probably a publicity shot. It is thought to have been taken outside The Whisky A Go Go in Queen’s Square.

Finally we have a picture of Bobby Lee of the Brighton Tigers ice hockey team shaking hands with Billy Laine, who was manager of Brighton and Hove Albion manager at the time.
The Tigers played at the SS Brighton Sports Stadium, now the Kingswest, and were a sporting success story for many of their 30 seasons.
