THERE will be overnight closures and some daytime disruption on a seafront road while resurfacing work takes place.

Brighton and Hove City Council is starting work to resurface part of the A259 Kings Road on Tuesday evening.

There will be no disruption to access to the vaccination site at the Brighton Centre, as works in this area will take place at night.

The resurfacing, which is expected to take approximately three weeks, will be carried out on parts of all three vehicle lanes and the temporary cycle lane between the Grand hotel and Medina Villas.

Resurfacing will mainly be carried out on the westbound carriageway, with some limited work on the eastbound side.

From Tuesday for four nights, the works will start at 8pm between the junction of Cannon Place and Western Street, with a full eastbound closure until 7am.

Westbound traffic will be moved onto the north side of the road and all side road traffic will have to turn right when exiting them.

The temporary cycle lane will also be closed during the overnight works, but westbound cyclists will be able to use the cycle lane on the upper promenade during these hours.

From Monday, April 12, works will be carried out in the daytime to avoid disturbing a residential stretch further west along the seafront.

Both carriageways will remain open but there will be some disruption and delays while the works progress, and temporary traffic signals will be used.

These works should be completed by the end of the week on April 16, the council said, with a further two nights of works on the westbound carriageway from Waterloo Street to Montpelier Road.

The works are part of long-term maintenance for the highway to fix wear and tear after the seafront road was identified as failing by the council, which has a statutory duty to keep the highway safe.

The authority said road resurfacing cannot take place in cold conditions and it is taking the opportunity to carry out the works while traffic volumes are still lower than normal and while hotels are still closed.
