ENFORCEMENT officers will fine people £150 if they are caught leaving rubbish on the beach.

Brighton and Hove City Council will issue on the spot fines for people dropping or leaving rubbish on the beach today.

Four enforcement officers will patrol the seafront on each day of the Easter weekend.

It comes after bins on the seafront were left overflowing as crowds flocked to the beach to make the most of the fine weather.

Pictures showed beer cans, food containers and plastics bags stuffed with rubbish dumped on top of already full bins near the Palace Pier.

Tweeting online, the city council said: "Enforcement officers are out today and will issue fines o anyone who leaves rubbish on our beautiful beach."

Following the influx of beach-goers, the council has put about 70 additional large communal-type bins on the seafront.

Clear signage is also being put on the new bins to ensure beach-goers know they can be used for general rubbish rather than trade waste.

However, even if additional bins do become full, residents are urged to find a bin that is not full or to take their rubbish home.
