A huge new supermarket is set to welcome its first customers today.

The Lidl store at the Goldstone Retail Park in Hove promises to create about 40 new jobs and offer "fresh, quality and great value produce to the local community".

The store has a sales area which covers about 1,727 square metres and will feature facilities including an in-store bakery, customer toilets and "ample parking for cars and bicycles".

From today, it will be open between 8am and 10pm from Monday to Saturday, and between 11am and 5pm on Sundays.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Adam Forsdick, said: "We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing our new store to Brighton.

"It is great for us to be able to create more jobs in the area, and we are proud to serve the local community at this time."

Lidl bosses say Brighton and Hove charities are set to benefit from the opening of the new store, with excess stock donated to foodbanks based nearby.

A spokesman for the company said: "Surplus produce and customer donations will be given to organisations who redistribute food to some of the most vulnerable in our communities.

"This is delivered through Lidl’s Feed it Back scheme, which is run in partnership with Neighbourly and connects Lidl stores up and down the country with local charities, foodbanks, community cafes and kitchens, putting quality food surplus to good use every day."

The Goldstone Retail Park store becomes the second Lidl supermarket in Brighton and Hove, with the chain already operating a site in Arundel Road, Whitehawk.

There is also another store not far from the city in The Malthouse Estate, Shoreham.
