THE shops will be open again on Monday so here is a look back at how they used to be years ago.
This is Western Road, Brighton, in about 1957, looking west.
The shops on the left were later demolished to make way for Churchill Square. Note the vehicles – a disabled person’s car and, in front of it, a Standard 8.
We have more shopping 1950s’ style in Brighton’s open market. This is the second picture of it we have found in The Argus archive and, again, it shows off its ramshackle appeal.

Brighton boxer Tommy Farr is pictured outside what looks like a carriage of the Brighton Belle train.
Tommy rose from obscurity to meet Joe Louis for the world heavyweight title fight in New York in August 1937. He took Louis the full 15-round distance and was only narrowly beaten.
Tommy once ran the Royal Standard pub in Queen’s Road.
