A SCRAP metal fire has broken out at a recycling plant.

Smoke can be seen billowing into the sky from the A27 after the blaze broke out at the site in Southerham Lane, Lewes, this morning.

The fire service, which was called to the scene at 5.05am, is urging people to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed.

A spokeswoman for the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) said: “Smoke can be seen from the A27 and multiple 999 calls have been made to our control centre.

“Scrap metal is alight.

“Six fire engines are at the scene along with a water carrier, an aerial ladder platform, a command unit and our General Purpose Truck.

“Crews are working hard and are expected to be there for several hours.”

The Argus:

Plant machinery is now being used to help the fire service tackle the blaze involving 250 tonnes of scrap metal.

At about 9.15am, the ESFRS spokeswoman added: "We're making good progress.

"Great work by our partners and crews on the ground."
