THESE pictures show the Duke of Edinburgh visiting Sussex in the 1960s, at the beginning of two decades of turmoil for the Royal Family.

As tributes pour remembering the long life of Prince Philip, we have taken a look back at some of his visits from across the decades.

In 1962, the Duke accompanied the Queen on a visit to Brighton College, nine years into her reign as monarch.

That year also princess Anne turned 12 and the royal family posed for this portrait to mark the occasion.

The Royal Family faced significant milestones and challenges in the 1960s, including tabloid coverage of Princess Margaret’s affair, to Prince Charles’s reported romance with Camilla Parker Bowles.

With the Space Race in full swing that decade, the world watched as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. The pair would meet Prince Phillip and the Queen later that year.

The Duke of Edinburgh's death was announced today by Buckingham Palace.

He was married to the Queen for more than 70 years and dedicated decades of his life to royal duty, serving the nation at the monarch’s side.

He officially retired from public engagements in the summer of 2017.

The Palace said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

“Further announcements will made in due course.

“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
