Tomorrow, Brighton beer-lovers will finally be able to sink a pint at their favourite pub for the first time in 2021.

Granted, they may not yet be allowed inside the premises, but beer gardens will be allowed to reopen as lockdown rules are relaxed just that little bit further.

And the city's landlords are ready to get back to what they do best.

"Better days are almost here," Jack Cregan, owner of Bison Beer, said. The company runs the Beach Bar on Brighton seafront, with the venue promising to be "bigger, better and more socially responsible than ever before".

"We can’t wait to reopen on April 12," Jack said. "It’s been a long, hard winter for everyone but hope springs eternal and we are ready.

"The science says we should be meeting outdoors and what better place to reunite with friends that besides the seaside with a few beers in hand.

"We’ve got Wood X Coal on the barbecue and deckchairs for days."

The latest loosening of lockdown restrictions, step two of the government's "road map", sees non-essential retail permitted to reopen alongside gyms and personal care premises such as hairdressers and nail salons.

However, it is the return of pub gardens which has proved to be the most hotly anticipated for many, with hospitality venues allowed to serve people outdoors.

And, thankfully, the government has done away with the substantial meal ruling which had the nation debating the benefits of ordering a scotch egg last winter.

However, the government only released the exact rules for reopening pub gardens this week, leaving many with a job on their hands to prepare for tomorrow.

These included a specification that any outdoor marquees or coverings must have at least 50 per cent of the area of their walls open at all times while in use.
