A PUB will be told today whether it can open after officials decided it was not Covid compliant.

Brett Mendoza, of the Caxton Arms in Brighton, installed a new roof, new heaters and new furniture so he could open his doors today following the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions.

But, despite receiving “over 700 bookings”, the pub in North Gardens will remain shut after Brighton and Hove City Council officials decided it did not follow Covid guidelines.

The Brighton pub was adapted in hopes of opening today, April 12, as lockdown restictions are loosened

Mr Mendoza said yesterday: “Brighton council responded with a detailed explanation as to why my garden with no roof is not Covid compliant.

"I haven't accepted the decision.

“My brewery has been brilliant in helping me, and they are on the case.

“I’ve made decision not to open tomorrow. I've poured a pint.

“Thank you everyone for your kind words of support, helping spread my farcical situation far and wide.

“A final decision from Brighton and Hove City Council is due within 24 hours.

“I hope I can open next week, even with just 32 seats of my 160 capacity. It was fully booked every night.”

Mr Mendoza described himself as “absolutely devastated”.

The council has been contacted for comment.

Lockdown restrictions in England have lifted today allowing non-essential retail, hairdressers, gyms and pub beer gardens to reopen.

From today non-essential shops, hairdressers, nail salons, libraries and community centres and outdoor hospitality venues such as beer gardens will be allowed to reopen across England.

Most outdoor attractions such as zoos and theme parks can reopen, although wider social distancing rules will still apply to prevent indoor mixing between different households.
