DRIVERS have been warned to expect disruption due to planned roadworks on the A259.

The work is set of affect the road at Newhaven for almost a month, starting on April 20 and ending on May 18.

Some lanes of traffic will be closed while the roadworks are carried out to "allow work on the pedestrian crossing and signals to take place safely".

Between April 20 and May 1, lane closures will be in place on the road prior to the Meeching Road junction.

From May 3 to May 12, they will be implemented on the stretch of road prior to the South Road junction, and the highway prior to the Brighton Road junction will be affected between May 5 and May 18.

While lane closures are in operation near South Road, motorists wanting to join or leave the A259 from this junction will be diverted via Peacehaven.

Resurfacing work will then follow in June.

Karl Taylor, head of operations at East Sussex County Council, said: "We appreciate the lane closures will cause some disruption to road users and residents, but they are necessary to enable improvements to the pedestrian crossing and signals to be carried out safely.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

A temporary pedestrian crossing will be installed near the fitness centre and car park while the existing crossing point is turned off during the work.

People will be offered help to get through the roadworks where needed, East Sussex County Council has confirmed.

Following the completion of this work, the road from the Newhaven swing bridge to the junction with Brighton Road is due to be resurfaced, with night-time closures scheduled between June 2 and July 10.
