A VAN driver has been caught red-handed after driving past police while using his phone.

The motorist passed PC Tom Van Der Wee on the A27 while "tapping away" at a phone mounted on the windscreen.

After being stopped by the officer, the driver claimed there was no issue because he was using Google Maps.

He was fined for the offence.

Writing on Twitter PC Tom Van Der Wee said: "Van drove past me on the A27 with the driver tapping away at a phone mounted in the windscreen.

"I proceeded to pull him over - in my bright big police car.

"He genuinely saw no issue as 'it’s fine as long as it’s just Google Maps you’re using'.

"Unbelievable. Ticket issued.
