STEPS to a popular beach will be closed for “essential maintenance”.

The steps down to Birling Gap beach will be closed from Monday until Friday, April 30.

Wealden District Council is planning to re-deck the top section of the steps.

During the time of closure, there will be no access down to the beach from the car park, or from the beach up to the car park, the council has warned people planning to make a trip to the popular spot.

“Please bear this in mind if you plan to walk from other sections of the coastline, such as Cow Gap, Holywell, Falling Sands and Cuckmere Haven, as you will not be able to access the safety of the cliff top during periods of high tide,” a spokesman for the authority added.

“Check tide times before you set off to avoid being cut off from the tide.”
