A new underground arts venue on Brighton seafront opened for the first time on Friday.

Electric Arcade features two studio theatres and a cabaret stage, with owners hoping to put on a range of shows when lockdown rules are loosened further next month.

However, for its initial opening, the venue's bar provided cocktails and more to punters sitting on its beachfront terrace in Madeira Drive, to the east of Brighton Palace Pier.

Electric Arcade is run by Otherplace, the team behind The Warren which visits the city during Brighton Fringe. When coronavirus restrictions have been eased further to allow live performances, the team has big plans to host live theatre, comedy, music and film to satisfy Brighton's "discerning audiences".

It will also provide rehearsal spaces for artists in the city, who will be able to hold readings, meetings and rehearsals at the site, with several areas also doubling up as writing rooms.

Artistic Director Nicola Haydn said: "We've always prided ourselves on finding and creating space for artists to develop and hone their skills and this is just an extension of that - nurturing new work is central to what we do.

"It’s great to be able to have a year-round home again so we can do just that.

"The performance spaces are due to open with live shows when further restrictions ease but from this weekend our stylish beach front patio is open for business.

"There might not be live theatre but the stunning view of the sun setting behind Brighton’s iconic pier certainly does provide a bit of drama."

Tables can now be booked at Electric Arcade, which is open from 12pm to 12am, seven days a week.
