THE roof of a double decker bus was torn off when it crashed into a railway bridge.

Debris was left scattered across Kingston Lane in Shoreham following the incident in the early hours, including the bus roof, which was largely intact.

Brighton and Hove Buses confirmed one of its vehicles had been involved in the crash and said no one was injured.

Communications manager Marie Sansom said: "A Brighton and Hove bus struck Kingston Lane Bridge in Shoreham at 3.13am this morning (Tuesday).

"The bus was not in service and nobody was hurt. The incident is now being thoroughly investigated."

Network Rail engineers were called to the scene to ensure there was no structural damage to the bridge.

A Govia Thameslink Railway spokesman said: "Reports came in of an empty bus hitting Kingston Lane railway bridge at 3.37am last night.

"We don't run passenger trains at that time of night but, as a precaution, Network Rail imposed a speed restriction for around half an hour until an engineer had checked the bridge over."
