A SCHEME which aims to clean up Brighton and Hove's city centre streets is now more than halfway through.

Brighton and Hove City Council has shared image of teams working through Monday night to "blitz" Western Road with jet washers and more.

"The huge clean up is part of our ongoing campaign to Keep Brighton and Hove Tidy," a spokesman for the council said.

Monday was the eighth of 12 nights in which council teams are working from 9pm to 5am to give the city centre a deep clean.

The cleaning project was planned to coincide with the reopening of non-essential retail on April 12, in line with the government's roadmap to lifting lockdown restrictions.

A city council spokesman said: "We’ve been talking to businesses across the city as well as our partners at the Brighton improvement district to find out what they feel would be most welcome in line with reopening, and overwhelmingly the feedback was for street cleaning in some of our busiest streets and shopping areas.

"In response, a proposal was agreed at the policy and resources urgency sub-committee for extra funding of £120,000 for street cleaning that will be used in preparation for the reopening of non-essential retail, as well as later in the year."

On each of the 12 nights in the deep clean, a team of Cityclean staff uses high pressure hoses to jet wash bins, street furniture, lampposts and pavements, and paint out graffiti tags on lampposts along Queen's Road, North Street, West Street and parts of Western Road.

In addition to this, 70 additional, large bins have been installed along the seafront "so there is extra storage for rubbish in between collections", and extra rounds of emptying bins have been arranged.
