I HAVE just read Adam Trimingham's article on poverty in Sussex.

I lived in Brighton for a very large part of my life but since moving out I have no wish to return.

He makes Brighton sound like paradise which of course could not be further from the truth.

I know a number of people who have moved away from there and they all say much the same in that they never go there any more.

He calls Newhaven a dump, a term that I have often heard used to describe Brighton. Adam only refers to flytipping and traffic congestion as a problem but neglects to mention the numerous other problems such as graffiti, boarded-up shops, beggars and cycle lanes to name but a few.

The problem with Newhaven started when planners, in their wisdom, decided it was a good idea to maroon most of its shops on an island with a major route surrounding it, thus taking away a great deal of its trade since many people wouldn't realise that the shops were there.

He then goes on to complain about Seaford, saying that the hotels and boarding houses have gone. I don't know how far back he is going but I don't recall there having ever been hotels in Seaford.

The seafront is much cleaner than Brighton and as he says the parking is free. He also complains about Broad Street which I have always found to be quite satisfactory and at least all of the shops are open in normal times and it is certainly not the dowdy disgrace that he calls it.

I did note that he forgot mention Eastbourne which I consider to be far superior to Brighton in many ways.

Get back on that bike you often mention, Adam, and take a better look at the towns you are referring to and maybe you will change your opinions.
