A PHOTOGRAPH in Thursday’s edition of The Argus showed Brighton and Hove City Council staff who were working from 9pm until 5am to “blitz” Western Road with jet washers, something which is part of a 12-night campaign to give the city centre a deep clean.
A BHCC spokesman was quoted as saying that, having spoken to local businesses, a proposal had been agreed for extra street cleaning funding of £120,000.
So let's, as they say, “do the maths”: 9pm to 5am 12 days a week works out at a total of 96 hours' work; £120,000 divided by 96 equals £1,250.
From what I can make out the average salary for a street cleaner in Brighton is around the £10 an hour mark so my question is “if there aren’t 125 people out there scrubbing away like mad, exactly what is this £120,000, a not unsubstantial amount of taxpayers' money, being spent on?”.
