TWO street food chefs have been shortlisted for a new street food competition.

Quorn Foods "Battle of the Babs", plans to put six street food vendors from across the UK into a competition to find the new kebab king or queen. Two of the six vendors who have been shortlisted are from Brighton.

The two from are Beelzebab in Queens Road and The Two Fridas. They will have a chance of winning a billboard funded by Quorn Foods as part of a new initiative that is trying to support local street food chefs.

This initiative has been put in place to help street food chefs who have been affected by the recent pandemic which forced them to shut. It is also hoped the billboard will encourage people to shop locally and buy from street food vendors.

The chance to get some extra publicity for the two vendors will not only help their business but will also help them promote vegan-based dishes. Quorn Foods bases itself around meat-free products and believes that enjoyment does not need to be affected without meat.

Jess Keats, owner of The Two Fridas, said “The competition is a great opportunity to show that you don’t have to sacrifice flavour when cooking vegan dishes.

“It was so much fun coming up with a new dish and can’t wait to see what the public think.”

Luke Semlekan-Tansey, owner of Beelzebab, said “It would be great to see our business featured on a Brighton billboard if we win.

“Beelzebab was the first place in the UK to serve vegan doner kebabs. Our food always packs a big punch, and we think our Currito, made with Quorn’s Turkish style kebab, will hopefully impress quornisseurs across the country.”

Each vendor has created a new unique dish using the Quorn Makes Amazing range. The vendor Beelzebab has created a Currito for the competition and The Two Fridas have chosen to make a unique a Taco-bab.

Gill Riley, Quorn marketing director, said: “We’re thrilled to be supporting local street food vendors and their communities after such a challenging year for small businesses.”

“Our hunt for the kebab king or queen has shown us how talented our street food vendors are in the UK and we’ve loved seeing their creative new dishes using our Quorn makes amazing range.”

People will be able to support their local vendor by voting for them and their dish in a series of knock-out rounds on Quorn UK’s Instagram page starting on Thursday April 29. The winner will be crowned on May 5.
