IF YOU wanted to go dancing in Brighton in the 1980s there were plenty of places to choose from, but where better than the Pink Coconut?

The club in West Street was a Mecca for people looking for a fun night out – and over the years it welcomed its share of stars.

In a previous life, the Pink Coconut was Sherry’s, the dance hall so famous it is even mentioned in Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock.

It went on to become Paradox, Creation, Project, Tru and, most recently, Hedkandi.

But its dancing days are over and the site is being demolished to make way for a new development with a hotel and flats.

We have dug out some Argus archive pictures of the way it used to be, including in its heyday as Sherry’s.

One shows Richard Attenborough, who played Pinkie in the film adaptation of Brighton Rock, and fellow star Carol Marsh, who was Rose, making a guest appearance at the dance hall.

Among the party-goers at the Pink Coconut in the Eighties was actor Brian Capron, who still lives in Brighton today.

At that time he was best known as Mr Stuart “Hoppy” Hopwood in the TV show Grange Hill but he went on to even greater fame as serial killer Richard Hillman in Coronation Street.

Another star pictured at the club is Anita Dobson who, at that time, was Angie Watts in EastEnders.

Beauty contests seemed to feature a lot – other great pictures show entrants for the Miss Brighton competition getting ready and the winner of the Miss In-String event being carried off by a man dressed as Tarzan.
