SIXTY homes have been evacuated after a car crashed into a house and caused a gas leak.

Families in Perryfields, Burgess Hill were asked to leave their homes last night after a white Mercedes ploughed through a wall of a house.

Officers, along with fire crews, were called to the scene around 6.50pm.

All residents have now been allowed to return to their properties after the area was made safe.

Pictures taken from the scene show the car wedged in the building after mounting a kerb and leaving the road.

Onlookers can be seen watching on behind a police cordon, as the fire service's Technical Rescue Unit worked on the scene.

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: "Officers were called to Perryfields, Burgess Hill around 6.50pm on Friday.

"The collision caused a gas leak and a cordon was put in place to ensure the safety of those in the vicinity.

"Around 60 properties were temporarily evacuated while the area was made safe.

"All residents have now been allowed to return and now injured have been ported.

"Anyone who saw the collision or who has any other information is to contact the police online or via calling 101 quoting serial 1319."

Writing on Twitter, a spokesman from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two crews from Burgess Hill Fire and Rescue Service and the Technical Rescue Unit were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a home in Perryfields, Burgess Hill.

"Crews were called at 6.55pm today to make the scene safe.

"Sussex Police also attended."
