POLICE have shut part of a popular park after a potential unexploded bomb was found.

Officers have cordoned off a section of Stanmer Park this afternoon after a "possible unexploded mortar shell" was found at the beauty spot.

A 100-metre cordon is in place at the top edge of the park on the eastern side of Stonymere Way, and a bomb disposal team is due to attend.

Sussex Police said: "We're currently responding to a report of a possible unexploded mortar shell found in Stanmer Park.

The Argus:

"A 100m cordon has been put in place as a safety precaution and the EOD team will attend the scene.

"Thanks for your patience and understanding while we carry out our work."

A photo shared on social media shows the possible unexploded mortar shell.

It comes after a possible unexploded mortar shell was found on Brighton beach earlier this month.
