THERE were 40 new cases of coronavirus confirmed across Sussex yesterday, according to the latest official figures.

Public Health England data shows ten more people tested positive for the virus in Brighton and Hove, as of 9am yesterday.

It means there has now been a total of14,537 cases confirmed in the city.

The rate of infection in Brighton and Hove now stands at 4,997 cases per 100,000 people - lower than the England average, at 6,845.1.

In East Sussex there were 12 new cases recorded over the period. There has now been 30,550 cases in the county since the pandemic hit.

In West Sussex, 18 more people tested positive for the virus. It takes the county's total number of cases to 41,838.

The 40 new cases in Sussex were among 302 new cases recorded across the South East, and there has now been a total of 539,336 cases in the region.

Across the UK, a total of 2,685 new cases were confirmed.

It means a total of 4,409,631 people have tested positive for Covid-19 across the country.

Nationally, there were 17 coronavirus deaths recorded, within 28 days of a positive test.

The total UK death toll now stands at 127,451.
