MARTIN Lewis has issued a warning about a potential flaw in the Universal Credit system, which could mean there are no payments at all in May.

The Money Saving Expert team warned that a trap created by the bank holiday could leave come people without cash.

According to the weekly newsletter, the problem could impact anyone whose employer pays early ahead of a bank holiday.

The Early May bank holiday falls on Monday, May 3 this year and as a result, many employees will receive their paycheck on April 30.

Those likely to get their salary early are those paid on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd of the month.

The warning read: "On universal credit? Beware a bank holiday payment trap. It's complicated but the upcoming bank holidays could mean you get NO universal credit in May. "

If you think this might be you, then it is advised that you check what date your Universal Credit assessment period starts and finishes on.

The more you earn in the assessment period - the fewer benefits you will receive in the following month.

It means it could look like your earnings have doubled for your April assessment period, if it runs from April 1,2, or 3 - meaning you could get significantly less in May.

The warning follows Martin Lewis' recent explanation as to why some Sainsbury's customers have stopped getting weekly points bonuses.

Sainsbury's customers have been complaining about not be able to build up points as quickly as before.

The supermarket chain has apologised to shoppers and said they are "personalising" Nectar card offers.

The Money Saving Expert said in a post on his site that the move is part of an "under-the-radar shake-up to the loyalty scheme".
