A SUSSEX town has been named as one of the best places in the UK for public toilets.

The Public Toilet Index 2021 ranked Horsham seventh in its top ten places with the highest number of open toilets per 10,000 population.

The town has a population of 143,791 and 73 public toilets, of which 63 are open, with 36 baby changing facilities, according to the research by PlumbNation.

It means Horsham scored 4.3 out of 10 for open toilets per 10,000 population.

Of the UK areas analysed, the Scottish Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway and Cornwall had the most open toilets per 10,000 population, with the Highlands having the most, at 9.2 toilets per 10,000 population.

The index also ranked UK cities with the most free toilets and the most accessible toilets - with Edinburgh coming top in both lists.

Brighton and Hove did not make the top ten for any of the three lists in the index.

The city council recently announced 24 new temporary toilets are being installed at six different seafront sites as part of efforts to reduce long queues as lockdown is eased and more people head to the seaside.
