A ROYAL Navy warship was seen on patrol off the coast of the city over the bank holiday weekend.

HMS Severn patrolled about a kilometre offshore and walkers in Brighton and Hove took pictures of the vessel.

Photographer Sam Carragher snapped the ship as it went past landmarks such as Brighton Pier, Shoreham Port, the Rampion Windfarm, and Brighton Marina.

The naval vessel is sometimes seen off the coast of the city and has previously been tasked with patrolling the English Channel as migrant boats make the perilous voyage from France.

Previously, The Argus reported how HMS Severn has also patrolled UK waters and shadowed Russian warships.

Last summer Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey MP said: "The Royal Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessels are proving their worth with yet another successful operation in defence of our home waters.

“These highly capable ships and their crews are always on watch protecting our nation’s interests all year round.”

Other off shore patrol vessels (OPVs) have also carried out operations off the Sussex coast, including HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne.
