THERE were 40 more cases of coronavirus confirmed across Sussex over the weekend.

The latest available figures from Public Health England released yesterday show there were five new cases recorded in Brighton and Hove between Friday and Sunday.

It brings the total number of cases recorded in the city to 14,557.

In East Sussex, the number of new cases rose by 11 over the period.

It means 30,589 people have now tested positive in the county, since the pandemic hit.

There were 24 new cases recorded in West Sussex, bringing the total number of cases confirmed in the county to 41,937.

The 40 cases in Sussex were among 301 new cases confirmed across the South East between Friday and Sunday.

The region has now recorded a total of 540,374 cases.

Case data has not yet been made available for today due to the bank holiday.

Yesterday, cases across the UK rose by 1,671, bringing the national total to 4,420,201.

There were 14 deaths recorded nationally, within 28 days of a positive test.

It brings the total death toll across the UK to 127,538.
