MOST days we can see stories in The Argus about people who are finding life difficult while they are on benefits.

I can understand this as I too have been in great difficulty.

Back in spring 1955 we were evicted from our flat in Buller Road. I was only six years old and my brother, Graham, was only three years old.

I can remember the men picking up the sideboard and start to carry it out.

My mum said "you can't take that as I have paid for it!".

The men took no notice. My mother grabbed one side and I the other, but we were still heading towards the front door.

We never went into the flat again.

We stood in the road for ages and I did not know what was happening.

We had some carrier bags of clothes with us, but nothing else. Even our toys went.

We lived with another family around the corner for over three years and then we moved in with our grandparents in Arnold Street while my father was living in the Blue Star garage.

After two years we were allocated a nice house in Hollingbury and things started to pick up.

So good old Brighton never let us down.
