A RAILWAY station was shut early this morning after reports a man had threatened to set off an explosive.

Police were called to Brighton railway station at 3.49am after reports of the bomb threat.

Officers swiftly detained a 27-year-old man, who was arrested and brought into custody for questioning.

He was found not to be carrying an explosive device.

The station was shut temporarily for a search to be carried out.

Police also cordoned off the area as a safety precaution and armed officers did a sweep of the station.

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw said: "This is being treated as an isolated incident and there is not thought to be any threat to public at this time.

"The cordon has now been lifted and train services have resumed from Brighton Railway Station.

"Officers remain at the scene working with British Transport Police to carry out further enquiries.

"We are thankful to the public for their patience and understanding while we carried out our work.”
