A ROAD shut by police earlier this evening has been cleared after a house fire nearby.

Officers closed the A23 Beaconsfield Road in Brighton earlier this evening and a detour was in operation along Stanford Avenue, Ditchling Road and Oxford Street.

There was heavy traffic in the area and some bus services were affected.

Sussex Police have now confirmed the closure was due to a multi-agency repsonse to a house fire in Shaftesbury Road.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at 4.30pm after reports of a fire across the first and second floor of a residential property.

One person was rescued from the blaze and was treated by paramedics at the scene.
