These Argus archive photographs, above and left, are almost certainly French and Belgian soldiers rescued at Dunkirk in June 1940.

They landed at Hastings Pier and look happy to be on allied soil.

Many of the surviving French soldiers would have likely joined the Free French Forces and more were recruited in Britain from those of French descent already living here.

They supported the Resistance in occupied France.

Our final picture is taken outside the Adelphi Hotel in Warrior Square, St Leonards, probably also in 1940.

It is not quite clear, but the insignia on the soldiers’ shoulders looks like that of the Royal Air Force.
