Organisers of a charity fundraiser which raised thousands of pounds are calling on people to make the next event even more successful.

The first Cancer Research UK Relay for Life event in Brighton raised £9,500 to support vital work into the causes and treatment of the disease.

The 24-hour event at Stanmer park brought together the community to celebrate the lives of those who have survived cancer, remember those who have passed away and to honour the courage of their loved ones.

The Brighton Relay for Life committee now wants to hear from friends, families and work colleagues interested in forming teams to take part.

Each team fundraises in the build up to the event and then takes turn to walk, run or skip around the running track at the park.

Cancer survivors are also urged to come forward and join together for an emotional lap of honour which kicks off the whole event.

Another highlight is the "candle of hope" ceremony where special messages are written in sacks in memory of or in celebration of the loved ones and these are placed around the track with candles in them.

Relay for Life was inspired 20 years ago when Gordon Katt ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society in honour of his cancer patients.

It is now the world's largest fundraising event and hosted by 22 countries.

Brighton committee chairman Richard Carter said: "We want to celebrate life and pay tribute to those who have coped with cancer but just as equally to remember loved ones who have passed away.

"There are many different strands to Relay for Life and anyone who can help out in any way is urged to get in touch.

"Don't worry if you've not been involved in fundraising before.

"This is a unique event and every single person in Brighton can play a part in supporting Cancer Research UK."

Relay for Life will be held over the weekend of May 31 and June 1.
