A COLOURFUL new mural has been commissioned to be painted after the success of a similar event last year.

The mural is part of work to rejuvenate an electricity sub-station on the northwest corner of Wish Park, Hove.

Last year Hove resident David Wicken, 65, and the Red Herring artist group decorated the east-facing wall with the first Wish Park mural which depicts the history of the park. That design included the rumoured Victorian circus elephant buried somewhere on the grassy lawns.

The plans are for the new mural to be painted on the south-facing wall to commemorate the park's regular visitors. The design will show the people and even some dogs relaxing on a bench on a sunny day.

David said: “After last year's elephant mural, we had a lot of people asking what are we going to do with the other wall?

“What we have done with an agreement with the UK Power Networks is to paint a bench with park regulars and dogs.

“It should brighten up that corner of the park even more.”

Alongside the mural there will also be plants, replacing a scruffy patch of grass. They will be colourful wildflowers that will attract insects to their bulbs ahead of spring next year.

Similar to last year's design the new mural will incorporate some imagery from children. They will create the designs at an art workshop on Saturday.

Money for the mural is being raised by donations, which have already reached more than £1,600.

To help bring costs down Cox and Co estate agents will be donating the paint needed and building company Chandlers Building Supplies will be providing wood for the planters underneath the mural.

Work is set to start at the end of June and is expected to take three weeks, depending on the weather. Once completed, there will be a picnic with music to celebrate the unveiling.
