THERE has been a surge in violent attacks on parking wardens by members of the public, including one who was pushed to the floor.
East Sussex County Council said there has been four serious incidents in May as parking enforcement officers went about their job in Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings and Rother.
It comes after two parking wardens were put in hospital in January following assaults in the county.
The council said a plea to the public earlier this year to treat parking wardens with respect led to a reduction in incidents, including in April when no attacks were reported.
Cllr Claire Dowling, lead member for transport and environment said: “We know the majority of motorists treat parking enforcement officers with respect and appreciate they have a job to do.
“Unfortunately, a minority of people believe it’s OK to verbally and physically assault officers who are trying to keep the county’s roads clear and safe, and that is just not acceptable.”
“There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behaviour.
"If you don’t want to be asked to move your vehicle or get a fine, don’t park in breach of clearly marked restrictions – it is that simple.”
