THE largest arts festival in the country kicks off tomorrow with hundreds of events set to take place over the next month.

Brighton Fringe is celebrating the launch of its 2021 festival with a free outdoor showcase at Fringe City in Jubilee Square tomorrow and Saturday from 5pm, where there will be live performances, food stalls and bars.

The festival, which normally takes place throughout May, has been pushed back this year to allow shows to go ahead at indoor venues, in line with the government's timeline for the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

There is plenty on offer at the "hybrid" festival, with a mix of in-person shows and digital productions, including cabaret, circus and comedy, dance, drama and drag.

Highlights include the return of the Spiegeltent at the Old Steine, with cabaret shows from artists including Boogaloo Stu and Drag Prince Alfie Ordinary.

The popular Brighton DJs English Disco Lovers will also be celebrating their eighth birthday and the end of lockdown with three different parties at the Spiegeltent stretching beyond the Fringe, on June 25, July 2 and July 9.

The Warren returns to Victoria Gardens with plenty of comedy, including Brighton's own award-winning MC Stephen Grant alongside Angela Barnes.

There will be some new socially-distanced spaces in addition to its new year-round seafront venue, The Electric Arcade.

The Ladyboys of Bangkok are back with their glittering Flight of Fantasy show at the Sabai Pavilion in St Peter's Square, and there will be a range of theatre shows across the city, from Shakespeare plays to work by new, up and coming writers.

Outdoor productions at St Ann’s Well Gardens include Twelfth Night by Drama Impact, a return of Something Underground Theatre Company’s The Spirit of Woodstock and Storyland, a storytelling adventure for children by Brambledash Theatre.

Julian Caddy, chief executive of Brighton Fringe said: “We are delighted to see the return of Brighton Fringe and for this I would like to pay tribute to the participants and venues for their passion, dedication and resilience during these difficult times.

"The scale and scope of what is on offer this year is beyond all our expectations, and new events are going on sale every week.

"We can’t wait to welcome back artists and audiences safely to the city to celebrate the Fringe with us this year.”
