AFTER such a cool spring, many are hoping that the sun will come out just in time to enjoy a bank holiday weekend away.

Having been deprived of day trips, romantic getaways and hotel stays for many months, people up and down the country are now revelling in the chance to get out and explore once again.

Luckily, people in Brighton do not have to look far to find the perfect destination, as the city has been ranked as the top May Bank Holiday hotspot.

The city is set for a very busy bank holiday season, with travellers set to spend an average of £370 on their May vacation.

These findings have been revealed in a new survey issued today by Travelodge.

The hotel giant surveyed 2,000 British adults to find out their plans for the first official Bank Holiday post lockdown.

Almost 40 per cent of those surveyed said they hoping to make the most of the nice weather that is predicted and flock to the seaside for some sun, sand and sea.

Alongside Brighton, other popular coastal hotspots include Blackpool, Cornwall, Bournemouth and Bridlington.

Another key finding revealed that over a third (35 per cent) of people feel that the UK needs to get back to normality and by them taking a short break over the May Bank holiday.

One in three, (30 per cent) of Bank Holiday holidaymakers are seeking culture, shopping and fine dining and are taking a cosmopolitan city break to discover one of the UK’s 69 great cities.

The top city breaks for this May Bank Holiday weekend are Birmingham, Bath, Aberdeen, London and Cardiff.

Visiting family across the UK is a key activity this Bank Holiday with 28 per cent of people are taking a road trip to reconnect with their loved ones.

While one in ten people have organised a family get together in a central location so that they can pack in seeing lots of members of their family over the bank holiday weekend

However, 25 per cent of holidaymakers are yearning to be one with nature and want to explore our glorious British countryside this May Bank Holiday.

Top rural retreat destinations for this weekend included the Cotswolds, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and the Scottish Highlands.
