LITTER has been left behind on Hove Lawns after the bank holiday weekend.

Glass, plastic and empty food wrappers were just some of the items left on the grass at Kingsway, Hove after a busy weekend.

It comes after large groups of people headed down to the seafront as the sun came out, with the highest temperatures of the year so far.

Some of the rubbish was seen spilling onto the beach, despite bins extra bins being put in place to try and battle the issue.

Chris Wyles, 25, who regularly exercises on Hove Lawns, said: “I honestly think it is a disgrace, the lack of care is pathetic.

“How hard is it to put your rubbish in a bag?

"I don't understand why people think it's acceptable to litter in their own environment. Just bizarre."

The litter is not just an eyesore - it can harm the ground soil and local wildlife, if they eat the rubbish or get tangled up in it.

Brighton and Hove City Council has made 70 more bins available for this summer with signage saying they are for general waste and not trade waste.

Although some of the bins were full, there was still space in others.

Members of the public are asked to take their rubbish home with them when bins are full.

Anyone dropping litter could face a £150 fine.

The signage also makes it clear to people that if the bins are full, that they should take their rubbish home with them. There is also the reminder that people could be charged £150 on the spot fines.

Brighton and Hove City Council has been contacted for comment.
